GBUS is a community full of talents in different areas. We share different interests and we have different expertise. But no matter where we go or what jobs we do, we contribute meaningfully with our strengths, and we shine in our own way.

Aspired to bring positive impacts to Hong Kong’s economy, I joined the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) as a winter intern at the Exchange Fund Investment Office (EFIO).

My team oversees the credit risk of Hong Kong’s exchange fund investment. We pay close attention to the market and impose restrictions on the exchange fund investment. The job is finance-related, but my interest is more in the FinTech, digitalisation, and data side. Hence, I utilised my talent in tech and helped to develop automation that monitors market-implied ratings and generates corresponding reports. I have also conducted a benchmark study that compares HKMA’s performance to the industry benchmark regarding risk management and devised suggestions for improvements.

With the help of my supervisor, I was also able to make use of this internship opportunity to expand my network and learn from professionals in various aspects that affect Hong Kong’s economy. Believing that FinTech can promote macroeconomic and financial development, I have connected with seniors from the HKMA FinTech Facilitation Office and exchanged thoughts on multiple FinTech initiatives, especially the Central Bank Digital Currency. Besides, understanding that I have inadequate financial knowledge as an EFIO team member, I also met with colleagues from fixed income and asset allocation teams in EFIO and gained more insights on investment.

Although the position I landed in HKMA EFIO is in an area that I am not familiar with, I was still able to utilise my strength to contribute meaningfully, and at the same time, achieve a steep growing curve for myself. This is what the GBUS community trained me: show yourself, be confident, and shine wherever you are.
