Be A Melo Changemaker

I came across the term “changemaker” on a Cambodia service trip with HKUST Connect. Companionship was the best I could give the Cambodian kids. They planted a tiny seed in me that inspired me to be a social leader who will drive high-level corporate strategies that touch the hearts of the grassroots. And Project Melo is a perfect opportunity.
In November 2020, Project Melo was recruiting its inaugural class of Melo Fellows at HKUST. I learned about the opportunity from the Cambodia trip advisor at HKUST Connect. “15 CEOs and 25 Student Fellows and Peers, Co-creating for positive changes in Hong Kong.” It seemed to be an exciting, adventurous journey. Without a second thought, I signed up, and my genuine sharing of my aspiration impressed Melo’s founders. My Melo journey has been a gratifying experience.
Among the five social themes for co-creation projects with CEOs, my team focused on “Health and aging”. We worked with JIA Group’s CEO, Yenn Wong, an entrepreneurial restaurateur, to curate a happy food campaign. It aimed to raise the awareness of mental well-being among underprivileged households, especially those severely suffering from COVID-19. We came up with an innovative approach to connect the Group with the most neglected Group in the community - JIA’s Michelin chefs would conduct 4 Happy Food cooking classes with affordable, fresh “happy food”. Happiness can be simple and accessible to everyone. In my first time working closely with a CEO, I learned to ask stupid questions to clarify even the most miscellaneous things.
My Melo journey did not stop when the 2021 program ended. I became an Organizing Committee of Project Melo and co-created the Melo Program 2022 and 2023. The new role allowed me to become a student influence and drive new, younger forces to create social impact. From crafting the Melo Summit 2022, and building and implementing social media strategies; to strengthening relationships with Melo partners, including South China Morning Post, the D. H. Chen Foundation, and McDonald’s Hong Kong. These hands-on experiences are rare yet valuable and meaningful.
“You’re the only one who’s holding you back,” a quote from one of the Melo CEOs always reminds me to excel beyond my limit and seize every opportunity. Having said that, relentless preparation and commitment will also help me succeed as a socially responsible leader.
