Life is like a road trip.

Enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

Spending a semester in the United States offered me a unique intellectual experience. Since many fast-growing startups are incubated in Austin, I signed up for an entrepreneurial course to immerse myself in the innovative hub. The course was well-designed and involved elements such as design thinking workshops, elevator pitches, and mentorship with startup investors. UT Austin’s broad range of courses allows everyone to pursue their academic passion. I studied how Black Feminism and Womanism influence pop culture. I enjoyed all the inspiring and meaningful discussions with the professor and other students.

Sports bring people together within and across universities. I watched basketball and baseball games where UT Austin played against other universities. U.S. college games are just like professional games - both athletes and audiences are fully devoted. Exchange enabled me to embrace a healthy and balanced lifestyle. After class, I played ultimate frisbee and basketball till midnight with my friends. On the weekend, I kayaked on the serene Lady Bird Lake and practiced golf in the countryside, until the horizon turned into a canvas of gold.

Exchange allows one to explore a place and its culture thoroughly. Apart from Austin, I visited 6 other Texas cities, some of which might not even be commonly visited by locals. For instance, I joined the Bluebonnet Festival in Ennis, to be surrounded by a sea of Texas state flowers. I also travelled to the Fort Worth stockyards, to learn about the cowboy heritage. Although Texas might not be a popular tourist destination, this culturally fascinating state is worth exploring.

Many of my travel buddies in the States were GBUSers too. We wandered in the Yosemite National Park and enjoyed the breathtaking sunset on the scenic Highway 1. These are just a few examples of many once-in-a-lifetime memories that we had created together. Our GBUS community is well-connected across years too. During my first week of exchange, I was grateful that a GBUS alumnus who works in Austin showed me around the city.

Life is beautiful because of the people we meet and the memories we share along the journey.
