Hong Kong is famous for being the financial hub of Asia. It's no surprise that almost everyone studying here is working towards a finance degree or aiming for a finance career. I happened not to be one of those people. Because of this, I always had that little worry in the back of my head about not finding enough opportunities in Hong Kong that fit my passion. Luckily, the GBUS community has pushed me towards my chosen path and gave me the confidence to walk on it with pride.
I have always been passionate about Design but never really thought about it academically or professionally. As a business student, I thought I would get into those traditional business roles. But GBUS has always encouraged us to explore different fields, supporting our choice of second majors and minors. I took the Design minor offered by the Engineering School in HKUST and discovered my dream role of Product Management. With the diversity of the GBUS community and how close-knit we are, I found seniors with similar "niche" passions and career aspirations. Seeing someone from my community doing so well on a path I was once afraid to take has empowered me to stay to my dreams.
Actively developing myself towards my set direction, I managed to be shortlisted for the J.P. Morgan x HKUST Fintech mentorship program under the UI/UX Design stream, which focused on Fintech product development. I was mentored by Product Managers and Software Engineers in J.P.Morgan, on the topic of digital authentication. I had to develop a new, secure, and innovative method for online and offline authentication for private banking clients. I put in a lot of work discovering pain points, doing the UI design, and making the use cases. Many late nights, but I enjoyed the process immensely because that was my passion and drive. The final pitch was for all J.P.Morgan APAC employees, and the winners were chosen by their votes. I won under my topic and even received an engraved iPad with the program's name.
The program made me realize that there are opportunities out there for any passion as long as you work hard. The GBUS community, with its diverse talent and strong belief in everyone, will always be there to support you no matter what.
